Its cloak of bracken, heather and gorse, coupled with its uniform, gradual slopes, make it a slightly featureless upland. Yet, Ling Fell is well-known for the pleasant, peaceful walking found on its paths, from where you can enjoy its fine surroundings.
A serene outlier on the edge of Lakeland’s North Western Fells
Ascents are usually made from Wythop Mill, from where a path arcs up the hillside, using its gradients rather than fighting against them. There’s scattered accommodation nearby; the Pheasant Inn towards Bassenthwaite is particularly charming, while more can be found around the lake or to the west in the town of Cockermouth.
Ling Fell’s summit is adorned by a trig pillar and features a contrasting panorama. To the north and west are undulating pastures, patchwork fields and pockets of woodland. In the far north are the Solway Firth and the Southern Uplands of Scotland, while you can gaze at the Irish Sea to the west beyond Cockermouth.
To the south and east rise some of the North Lakes’ finest fells. The Skiddaw Group is magnificent to the east, with Skiddaw’s huge whaleback form rising above the more characterful Long Side ridge. To the south are the fading lines of the North Western Fells, a skyline that culminates on distant Grasmoor.
