One of the fell’s most prominent aspects is the system of crags that rise above the termination of Coledale. This is Eel Crag, which Alfred Wainwright named as the entire fell in his classic guides. If you’re a Wainwright bagger and you’re scratching your head as to why you can’t find Crag Hill, this is the reason.
Due to its central location, there are numerous walking routes to Crag Hill. Buttermere and Keswick both serve as great bases with plenty of amenities. All are a pleasure, on grassy, airy ridges without technical difficulties. The fell is rarely out of bounds for well equipped hikers in winter.

It's commonly hiked as part of the Coledale Round. The summit is broad and flat. There is a trig pillar on top but the true summit is 155 feet (35 m) south of the trig point. It's a great fell from which to admire Coledale Beck, winding down the valley towards Braithwaite.
