Outerside Summit

Hiking

5.0

(88)

Coledale is ringed by fine ridges, topped by charismatic fells that increase in height towards the head of the valley. Yet within this elongated loop, nestled closely to Coledale’s southern arm, like children protected by their parents, are two smaller Wainwright summits: Barrow and Outerside.

Outerside is the higher of the two; its dark, heather-clad slopes rise to a not inconsiderable 1,955 feet (568 m). Its position makes for a unique vantage, both down onto Coledale Head and the remains of its mining industry and up to the exciting Causey Pike to Scar Crags ridgeline. It is quite easily linked with these higher summits, as well as to Barrow, its smaller sibling.

From the summit, the vista to the east is extensive, with the Skiddaw and Helvellyn ranges seen well. However, distant views to the west are blocked by the larger fells above. Direct approaches begin from Braithwaite or the Newlands Valley, where there’s scattered accommodation. If you’re out of luck, it’s not far to Keswick.

    Hiking

Outerside is a 1,955-foot (568 m) Wainwright fell in the north-west Lake District. Many sources include Outerside as a key feature of the Coledale Round but others see it as an optional extra. The summit is a great vantage point to look at Force Crag Mine just below Grisdedale Pike, which closed in 1990.

A lovely Wainwright fell in the middle of a horseshoe that is scenically spectacular. Not too high but it has grand standing views of Grisedale, Hopegill, Crag Hill and Causey Pike. Stunning!
