As one of the most distinctive peaks in the charming North Western Fells of the Lake District, hikes to Hopegill Head are utterly delightful. A pointed, rocky peak when seen from the east and north, it is a superb objective and a part of the popular Coledale Round. Its most conspicuous feature, Hobcarton Crag, dominates the valley of the same name and is seen beautifully from nearby Grisedale Pike.

The views on a clear day are glorious. On the distant western horizon, the Isle of Man rests on the glistening Irish Sea. In the opposite direction, Grisedale Pike’s ridges meet its lofty summit, whilst the rounded mass of Skiddaw rises beyond.

Walking routes to Hopegill Head are generally gradual and easy to follow, with the Vale of Lorton and the Keswick region equipped with your accommodation needs. The fell makes for a great winter adventure, when Lakeland flaunts its white coat.

    Hiking

Views for days! Surrounding peaks include Grisedale Pike, Grasmoor, Whiteside and Ladyside Pike. Hopegill Head can be climbed as part of the Coledale Horseshoe, or (my preference) over Ladyside Pike. It's a 2,530-foot (770 m) mountain that appears really sharp and pointy when viewed from the north west.

    Hiking

I would recommend to plan Whiteside Summit walk clockwise. If you do it anticlockwise it will be challenging descend. It can be very dangerous in wet conditions.

    Hiking

Did Hopegill Head as part of the Grasmoor Round so came across from Whiteside. This is a lovely ridge to walk to bag Hopegill and the views are tremendous, even though it was not such a good weather day today. I will do it again but come up from Grisedale Pike. Hopegill Head is also a UK designated Nuttall.

As you traverse this horseshoe-shaped route around the Coledale Beck valley, you will find yourself on rough fell paths, some very steep and stony. The trail provides spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding fells, including Skiddaw, Blencathra, and the Scafell range. This classic Lake District round is renowned for taking in multiple Wainwright fells, such as Grisedale Pike, Hopegill Head, Crag Hill, Sail, Outerside, and Barrow. Alfred Wainwright himself praised a section of the southern ridge over Scar Crags and Causey Pike as a grand ridge walk. The route's demanding nature is underscored by its role as host to the Coledale Horseshoe Fell Race, confirming its suitability for experienced fell runners. Due to the steep climbs, mild scrambles, and exposure on high-level ridges, it is not recommended to attempt this route in poor visibility or strong winds.
