Hikes to Dale Head take you to the highest point of the lovely fells that encircle the Newlands Valley. This is a grand objective, right in the heart of the Lake District, overlooking the Honister Pass, Newlands and Borrowdale. Few fells can claim to be so wonderfully situated.

Such is its location, there are walking routes to Dale Head from all directions. Some ascend quickly on challenging gradients; others are worth taking their time over whilst you imbibe the atmosphere of this stunning slice of Lakeland.

A magnificent viewpoint that is worth every ounce of effort

Its flanks are steep in every direction aside from that of the connecting ridge to neighbouring Hindscarth, so any journey to the summit will get that heart pumping and those thighs burning. By parking at the high passes of Honister or Newlands you can at least let the car do some of the hard graft.

Your reward is well worth the effort. Buttermere can be seen down the barrel of the Honister Pass, with the combs and peaks of the High Stile range towering above. To the south, the arced, northern face of Great Gable rises above its subsidiaries and beyond this are the Scafells, the highest mountains in England.

Though perhaps the finest sight is that of the nearby fells that make up the Newlands Round. There are many ways to link further Wainwrights to your day and visit lovely places like Dalehead Tarn, perfect for a summer’s day wild swim.

Accommodation is plentiful in the Newlands region and it is not far to the outdoor mecca of Keswick. Yet more places to lay your head can be found in Borrowdale and Buttermere. In all but the most severe winter conditions, Dale Head should still be possible for hikers.

    Hiking

Dale Head occupies a grand position, its lofty perch overlooking Buttermere, Newlands and Borrowdale. It makes for a quick, if strenuous, Wainwright bag from the Honister Pass, or it can be linked with the likes of Hindscarth and Robinson to the west and High Spy, Maiden Moor and Catbells to the north. However you choose to tackle it, it will richly reward your efforts.
