Hallin Fell summit and view of Ullswater

Hallin Fell summit and view of Ullswater

Hiking

5.0

(95)

A green fist rising halfway along Ullswater’s eastern shore, this is a remarkable mini-mountain that packs a punch much greater than its modest height would suggest. Hikes to Hallin Fell are an ideal first taste of mountain adventure for your little ones.

As far as maximum reward for minimum effort goes, there are few fells in the Lake District that rival this. Walking routes to Hallin Fell can be made even easier by a precariously zig-zagging road that ascends from Howtown to a high pass adorned by the lovely St Peter’s Church. From here the summit is a mere 550 feet (170 m) above you.

Massive summit cairn, huge summit views, minimum effort

Hallin Fell is liberally criss-crossed with paths, hinting at the wealth of adventure to be had exploring every nook and cranny. Ascents from the shores of Ullswater, where Hallinghag Wood’s secluded bays provide a gorgeous lunch spot, are also straightforward.

Once on top (you can’t miss it, the summit pillar is absolutely gigantic), you’ll be blown away by what lies before you. Ullswater’s majestic waters point the way into the dramatic heart of the Eastern Fells, where Helvellyn, Fairfield and St Sunday Crag rise, aloof and spectacular. The grassy ridges of the Far Eastern Fells rise and fall in hazy layers to the south and east.

Ullswater is dotted with camping and accommodation options, some of which are within walking distance of the fell. To give the whole family even more excitement, you can link an ascent of Hallin Fell by taking a ride on the Ullswater Steamer from any one of the lakeside villages to Howtown. Just make sure you don’t miss the last one back.

    Hiking

For such a small hill, Hallin Fell delivers absolutely epic views down Ullswater and across to the Helvellyn group. This is an ideal fell for take the little ones for their first taste of mountain adventure.

It is a conspicuous sight, rising in isolation to 1,273 feet (388 m) above the lake. The enormous columnar cairn on its summit only serves to make it more distinctive.

    Hiking

To make the walk longer and for some good views, walk along the lake shore path before heading up the North side of the fell, this is a less used path than the one on the south of the fell which i walked down straight towards the parking area but also ovbious and easy to follow👍🏻
