Crib Goch is the kind of arête that makes hikers go misty-eyed. Exhilarating, adrenaline-pumping and life-affirming, hiking along Crib Goch’s knife-edge ridgeline will have you whooping for joy. When you reach the other side, you might be whooping with relief.

The highest point of this arête sees you at 3,028 feet (923 m) and while Snowdon is usually the end goal, hiking Crib Goch is more than a worthy achievement by itself. Perhaps more so. As you work your way along this ridge, you’ll need to stop multiple times. Not because it’s exhausting, but because you’ll need to watch your footing and you can’t do that if you’re admiring the views.

Jaw-dropping landscapes in every direction

Crib Goch is a grade one scramble which is the lowest scramble classification where you’ll need to use both hands and feet on some sections. This makes it ideal for competent hikers if the weather is calm. Saying that, it would be foolish to underestimate this jagged, exceptionally exposed ridge. Ascending from Cwm Glas, you can find the north ridge grade one scramble with stunning views too. To the west, Crib Goch’s pinnacles require careful movements and are an exhilarating experience.

You’ll find sheer drops on Crib Goch and it’s not for those who dislike heights. Finding the route can be tricky once you’re scrambling to the crest, which further challenges hikers, but once you’re there, it feels as though you’re standing on the very edge of Snowdonia. With Llyn Llydaw glinting below on one side and Cwm Uchaf falling away to the other, you’ll have to remember to breathe.

Hiking to Crib Goch is a phenomenal experience but always check the weather first and be prepared for a change in conditions. Unless you’re an experienced winter mountaineer, avoid the ridge in icy or snowy situations. As one of the wettest places in the UK, remember that rain can hamper visibility and dramatically increase the risk of slipping.

    Mountaineering

By far the best views on this route up or down from Snowdon. Please do be aware that if you are in any doubt of crossing the full length of the ridge then do not start it. If however you are happy with heights, drops and are after adventure then get yourself up here.

    Hiking

In my view THIS IS NOT A HIKING HIGHLIGHT, but mountaineering. The ridge of Crib Gich is a great scamble, right over the ridge. The rock is pretty solid, but exposure is high in places and any mistake/slipping is probably fatal along most parts of the upper section. You are rewarded with great views and a unique experience.
