There are several peaks under this name in Snowdonia but this Y Garn is surely the most exceptional. One of the Welsh 3000s, Y Garn rises above the Pass of Llanberis on one side and the Ogwen Valley on the other. It’s commonly summited as part of a wider adventure scaling the Glyders.

Topping out at 3,107 feet (947 m), this tremendous mountain is a challenging ascent, with some scrambles and particularly steep sections. Nonetheless, it’s very achievable for anyone with reasonable fitness and a head for heights. Mountain-going children will have the time of their lives here too.

Ascend the Glyderau for fabulous Snowdonia views

Y Garn is most easily summited from Ogwen Cottage directly below, where you’ll find parking and a cafe, or from one of its neighbours. You can hike from the Pass of Llanberis as well. Whichever route you choose, the going is strenuous and includes some minor scrambles.

When you reach the summit, clear visibility will grant you the type of views that will have you returning year after year. To the north, sister Foel Goch and the Nant Ffrancon valley are twinned in visual perfection. To the north east, the Carneddau range rises above photogenic Llyn Ogwen. East, the Glyders and Tryfan beckon you on. South west, Snowdon looms.

Y Garn is a popular summit year round, but only experienced winter mountaineers with appropriate equipment should attempt the peak in snow and ice. Conditions can change quickly in the Glyderau, so always dress appropriately and be prepared to turn back should the weather close in.

    Hiking

Y Garn of the Glyderau is a mountain of two halves. On one side it drops in continuous green slopes to the pass of Llanberis. On its other it’s a scooped cluster of cliffs, ridges and buttresses, including the scrambling showpiece of Castell y Geifr, all the way to Llyn Idwal in Snowdonia’s most beautiful cwm.

Embark on a challenging yet rewarding hike through the dramatic glacial landscape of Cwm Idwal and up Y Garn, starting from Ogwen Cottage. This moderate to hard loop covers 4.6 miles (7.3 km) with a significant elevation gain of 1985 feet (605 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 6 minutes to complete. You will navigate varied terrain, from stone-surfaced paths around tranquil Llyn Idwal to rough, steep ground and scrambling sections through the iconic Devil's Kitchen, all while surrounded by high crags and breathtaking panoramic views across Snowdonia from Y Garn's summit.

Before you set out, be prepared for demanding conditions; good walking boots are essential due to uneven and potentially slippery surfaces, especially after rain. The trail is exposed, so you should be ready for changing weather and have some mountain experience. The ascent to Y Garn, particularly via Devil's Kitchen, requires sure-footedness and a good level of fitness, as it involves sustained steep climbs and descents. Always check the weather forecast before heading out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

This area holds immense geological and ecological significance, with Cwm Idwal being Wales' first designated National Nature Reserve. It showcases spectacular glacial landforms and unique geology, which even Charles Darwin studied in 1842. The route is also home to rare Arctic and alpine plants, adding to its biodiversity. Y Garn, the tenth highest mountain in Wales, offers some of the best views in Snowdonia and is often a quieter alternative to other popular peaks, providing a memorable connection to the region's natural history and beauty.
