Lantern Pike is a gorgeous little hill that rises to the west of Kinder Scout’s vast moorland plateau. It is separated from this upland giant by the valley of the River Sett, which is occupied by the lovely villages of Hayfield and Little Hayfield.

Its position on the boundary of the Peak District National Park makes it an interesting vantage point. The summit enjoys contrasting views of patchwork farmland set against rugged moorland and towards Greater Manchester’s urban sprawl in the west.

A beautiful Peak District Hill boasting sumptuous views of Kinder Scout

You can find accommodation in Hayfield and Little Hayfield, including at the Lantern Pike Inn, which has five en-suite rooms. The most common approaches to Lantern Pike begin from the Hayfields and are a treat for wildlife enthusiasts, particularly in the warmer months. Wildflowers and birdsong characterise the early stages, before you begin a relatively steep push towards the top.

The ascent can often be boggy, particularly after periods of rainfall, so dress appropriately. You may share the trail with people tackling the Peak District Boundary Walk, a circular 190-mile (310 km) long-distance trail that loops around the national park. The trail passes directly across the summit.

Your reward for reaching Lantern Pike’s top are tremendous Peak District views, particularly towards the vast upland plateau of Kinder Scout and down onto the Hayfields. If you’re after a longer adventure, Lantern Pike can be the warm up for a grander expedition to Kinder Scout, with both Kinder Reservoir and Kinder Downfall, the national park’s largest waterfall, easily reachable from here.

    Hiking

One of the best views in the Peak District

    January 25, 2020

    Mountain biking

Fast little descent back down towards Hayfield. Nothing too challenging but good fun. It turns to tarmac towards the end and watch the final section to the junction... Brakes may be hot and its easy to over do it. 😱

    Hiking

Fantastic panoramic views with contrast between views of Kinder Downfall on one side and the city centre skyline urban sprawl of Manchester on the opposite side.
