The Buachaille Etive Mor’s famous Stob Dearg peak, often simply referred to as ‘the Buachaille’, is one of the most instantly recognisable and glorious sights in the entirety of the Scottish Highlands. Hikes to Stob Dearg deliver you to the apex of this picture-postcard mountain, high above the vast wilds of Rannoch Moor.

The great gatekeeper of Glencoe, Stob Dearg is a tumultuous squat pyramid: a tangle of buttresses, gullies, tumbling burns and magnificent rock towers. Amongst these majestic, east-facing crags are rock climbing routes and daring scrambles, but there are no walkers’ breaches here. Instead, you’ll find walking routes to Stob Dearg via the two corries that take huge bites out of the northern flanks of the massif.

Awe-inspiring hiking on one of the most iconic mountains in the Scottish Highlands

Once you’re up onto the ridge, the views in every direction are stupendous. The Bidean massif’s huge bulk, sweeping ridges and lofty summits dominate matters to the west, towering above little sister Buachaille Etive Beag’s long ridgeline. There’s wave upon fading wave of glorious hiking country to the north, reaching its high point on Ben Nevis’ magisterial domed summit. Perhaps the finest view of all is from Stob Dearg’s very summit, as you gaze down onto the lochan-speckled landscape of Rannoch Moor, thousands of feet below.

Accommodation is plentiful in this, one of the most popular regions in the Highlands. The Kingshouse Hotel has a prime position, with front row seats to the classic aspect of the Buachaille. It offers everything from luxury rooms to simple lodges. In the pass of Glencoe, the Clachaig Inn is an outdoor lover’s institution, whilst the villages of Glencoe and Ballachulish also have many options. A wild camp on neighbouring Beinn a’Chrulaiste rewards with astonishing Buachaille views.

In winter conditions, the Buachaille is the reserve of experienced and equipped mountaineers only. The northern corries are prone to avalanche, so forecasts should be studied prior to setting out and extreme care must be taken.

    Hiking

Star of a million postcards, Buachaille Etive Mòr is the sentinel of Glen Coe: an iconic peak with a handsome pyramidal profile. Its domineering mass of knobbly outcrops and precipitous rock-faces, gashed by vertical gullies, look impenetrable – but thankfully its two Munro summits are well within the reach of the adventurous hillwalker.

    Hiking

Views to the east are fantastic reaching far accross the moor, and to the north Ben Nevis is very clear.
The shortest and easiest ascent for walkers is straight from Lagangarbh south and up the gully, though the climb in winter requires mountaineering experience and crampons.

The Stob Dearg from the massif of Buachaille Etive Mòr ('Big Shepherd of Etive') impresses with its chimney-like northeast face over the valley end of Glen Coe and Rannoch Moor.
