Meet Scotty Laughland – Do what you love

Meet Scotty Laughland: a  Mountain biker, explorer and our newest ambassador for 2019.

Growing up in Scotland, Scotty was never sure what he wanted to do. All he knew is that he loved the epic Scottish landscape he called home — and he loved discovering it by bike.  With a strong competitive streak running through him, it was only natural that he eventually moved into professional competition, starting out racing motorcycles before gravitating in the direction of the two things he loved: The mountains and bikes. And during his mountain biking career, he raced all over the world, racking up some impressive wins to boot. These days, however, you are more likely to catch him chasing epic outdoor discoveries than podium finishes…

With a brand-new outlook on riding, Scotty uses the trails as a form of self-expression rather than competition. He uses his mountain bike to travel, to explore, and to experience the world’s best trails — choosing instead to chase cultural experiences rather than more medals for the mantlepiece. We are thrilled to welcome him to komoot.

What’s your background in sports: I started mountain biking when I was 12 years old after successfully competing in trials from the age of 5. I raced downhill world cups while studying a master’s in mechanical engineering at university and transitioned to the Enduro World Series which ignited an interest in traveling to new and exciting places. As I went, I had the opportunity to work in video production and photography which opened up a host of opportunities to explore new destinations. And I haven’t looked back since. These days, however, instead of first-place finished, I  focus on sharing stories of riding in search of the best trails…

What are your main challenge you  2019: For me, 2019 will be all about continuing to grow as an athlete, creating content that I am proud of, having fun doing what I love and inspiring others to get out there and chase their dreams!

What has been your favorite komoot adventure to date: My favorite activity was also my introduction to komoot… It was a ride in/around Aviemore with the Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland event. We rode for six hours straight in the freezing cold, snow, rain and sun. It was an awesome introduction to komoot, giving me a first hand look into how it can be successfully used to map out an awesome ride!
