Monumental neoclassical building from the late 18th century on the northern Liffey quay, designed by James Gandon and recognizable by its large green dome and symmetrical facades. The richly decorated exterior features, among others, the famous riverine heads by sculptor Edward Smyth, representing the great Irish rivers. The building played an important role in Irish history and was heavily damaged in 1921 during the War of Independence, but was later fully restored. Today it is one of the most photogenic landmarks along the river and a quiet, wide passage on a route through the city center.
