Carsington Water is a reservoir operated by Severn Trent. It takes water from the River Derwent during high flow in the winter along 10km long tunnels.
the road around the edge is nice to ride although some cars are a bit quick. Café and toilets at the visitor centre.

A loop of Carsington Water & Alport Heights from Derby

    55.7km

    630m

Embark on a moderate road cycling loop from Derby, covering 34.6 miles (55.7 km) with a significant 2077 feet (633 metres) of elevation gain, typically completed in about 2 hours and 42 minutes. This route offers a diverse experience, combining expansive views of Carsington Water with the undulating countryside roads of Derbyshire. You will encounter significant climbs, especially on the eastern side of the reservoir and during the ascent to Alport Heights, which rewards you with panoramic vistas. While primarily on paved roads, be aware that some sections immediately around Carsington Water might be unpaved, making a hybrid or gravel bike potentially more suitable for those specific segments.

When planning your ride, consider that the overall difficulty is moderate due to the distance and elevation changes, requiring good fitness. The route begins from Derby, leading you through scenic countryside to Carsington Water, where visitor centers offer amenities. The challenging climbs, particularly around Kirk Ireton and up to Alport Heights, will test your legs. Ensure your bike is suitable for varied terrain if you plan to explore the immediate reservoir path, as some parts may not be ideal for pure road bikes.

This loop takes you to Carsington Water, England's newest and ninth-largest reservoir, which is a hub for watersports and offers opportunities to observe wildfowl from bird hides. You will also climb to Alport Heights, the highest point in the local area, managed by the National Trust. Along the way, look out for historical features like the 1940s RAF 'Bomb Tower' and a Bronze Age burial mound. The route may also pass through charming villages such as Kirk Ireton, providing options for a break at local pubs or shops.
