Butser Hill

Hiking

5.0

(127)

The high chalk grasslands of the South Downs are a walker’s delight, full of vibrant flora and wide-open vistas. Hikes to Butser Hill place you on the highest point of the entire ridge system, with magnificent views of Hampshire and the Channel.

A National Nature Reserve and a Special Area of Conservation, its slopes are renowned for diverse wildlife. The emblematic chalkhill blue butterfly fluttering above the vegetation is a common sight, as is the ostentatious Duke of Burgundy and the silver-spotted skipper. On a warm summer’s day, the evocative song of the skylark joins a veritable orchestra of natural sounds that combine to form Butser Hill’s rich symphony.

A hill boasting gorgeous wildlife and sumptuous views to the Channel

There are many options for walking routes to Butser Hill. All are family friendly and your dog is more than welcome too, as long as signage is heeded. The summit is part of the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, which boasts play areas and idyllic picnic spots. Wheelchair users can access much of the park and can visit the higher reaches via the road.

If bribery is in order to motivate the little ones, a kiosk on the top provides ice cream and cold drinks. The summit is also home to radio masts and the obligatory trig pillar.

On calm days, Butser Hill is popular with hang gliders and paragliders. The steeper gradients of the hill’s northwest flanks are perfect for launching off and riding the thermals. Hampshire is laid bare in this direction, a gorgeous stretch of rolling hills, patchwork farmland and villages. To the south is Portsmouth, the glistening Channel and the Isle of Wight across the Solent.

With train links to London and numerous amenities, Petersfield is a good base for rambles up Butser Hill. The market town has plenty of cafes and restaurants for that post-walk refreshment.

Lovely little winter afternoon amble up from the main NT car park to the mast, trig point, around the bowl and back to the car park. It is a UK listed Marilyn.
