    Hiking

It’s an exciting highlight walking up to Loch Etchachan. The crags have climbing routes on them and offer some trad climbing in the area. The walk up the path towards them is enjoyable and stopping at the small bothy to take in the views on a hot sunny day is recommended.

    Hiking

Early June 2024 I slept here one night after walking the Derry Cairngorn.
My Garmin showed 0 degrees the next morning with a perceived temperature of -7! ;-)

The next morning I packed up the tent again to do the Ben Macui.

There is absolutely nothing at this location, and certainly no bothy, approximately 1mi north from the peak of Derry Cairngorm. The bothy in the photo looks like the Hutchinson Memorial Hut which is about 1mi to the east.

The Derry Cairngorm & Beinn Mheadhoin loop from Linn of Dee offers a challenging hike through the dramatic landscapes of Cairngorms National Park. This difficult route spans 20.9 miles (33.6 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3574 feet (1089 metres), typically taking around 10 hours and 42 minutes to complete. You will traverse woodlands, estate roads, and rugged terrain, including boulder fields above 950 metres. The ascent to Derry Cairngorm provides magnificent panoramic views, especially of Ben Macdui, while Beinn Mheadhoin's summit ridge features distinctive granite slabs and pockmarked tors. A highlight is passing Loch Etchachan, the highest large loch in the UK, nestled at approximately 927 metres. Lower down, the trail also winds through areas of ancient Scots Pine forests. You can expect a long day out with diverse terrain and expansive vistas.

Planning your visit requires very good fitness and sure-footedness, as the trail involves steep sections and boulder hopping. The route starts from Linn of Dee, leading through woodlands before reaching an estate road to Derry Lodge. If you want to shorten the overall walking distance, you have the option to cycle the initial 10 kilometres to Derry Lodge. Be aware that in winter conditions, this route becomes significantly more arduous, necessitating the use of ice axes and crampons for safety. The presence of bothies like Hutchison Memorial Hut and Bob Scott's Bothy near Derry Lodge offers potential rest stops or overnight shelter for those undertaking longer excursions.

This loop is notable for its distinctive geological features and spectacular scenery. Beinn Mheadhoin's summit is adorned with unusual granite tors, making for a unique peak experience. From the 1,155-meter high summit of Derry Cairngorm, you are rewarded with excellent perspectives of Ben Macdui and the distant Lochnagar group, along with views of craggy coires and glens such as Glen Lui and Glen Derry. The ability to cycle part of the approach also sets this trail apart, offering flexibility for hikers. This route truly showcases the wild beauty and rugged character of the Cairngorms.
