Carnedd Llewelyn

Hiking

5.0

(122)

Straddling the county line between Conwy and Gwynedd, hiking up Carnedd Llewelyn gives you views south across stunning Snowdonia as well as north to Conwy Bay. As the second highest mountain in Wales, Carnedd Llewelyn is a mighty peak and you’ll find its summit cairn at 3,491 feet (1,064 m).

Sitting in the Carneddau range, your route options are plentiful and you can extend your adventure as much or as little as you like. Why not summit Carnedd Llewelyn’s sister tops of Carnedd Dafydd, Foel Grach too? With grassy slopes and defined ridges, this is a quintessential peak and towers dramatically over the beautiful Ogwen Valley.

Sweeping views and Wales’ highest lake

Many of the hiking trails up Carnedd Llewelyn are clear but occasionally route finding can be hampered by the terrain, particularly in poor visibility. In clear weather, the ridges and routes are obvious and sprawl out in different directions with flowing cwms streaming out between.

Carnedd Llewelyn’s summit is flat and rocky, providing plenty of spots to relax and take in the extraordinary panorama. Looking down to the west, spy Llyn Llyffant, the highest lake in Wales.

The summit is attainable all year, around although weather conditions can be prohibitive at any time. Due to its summit plateau, snow has a habit of building up and, in shaded gullies, can linger well into summer. With changeable year round conditions but plenty of fantastic sunny days, always check the forecast and hike prepared for a downturn.

Find accommodation and sustenance in the Ogwen Valley, Bethesda, Capel Curig and Betws-y-Coed.

    Hiking

Carnedd Llewelyn is the second highest peak in Wales. It is also very rugged, as is the whole Carneddau range which was shaped by the last Ice Age.

Legend has it that the two small lakes nestling below the towering cliffs to the east of Carnedd Llywelyn were haunted and that deformed fish with heads but no bodies lurked in their depths.

If you are lucky you may see the Welsh Poppy which can withstand the elements.
