Embark on a challenging touring bicycle adventure from Kinloch to Harris Bay on the Isle of Rum. This difficult 14.4-mile (23.2 km) gravel route takes you through wild, remote landscapes, offering spectacular views of the Rum Cuillin mountains and across to the Isle of Eigg. You will gain about 1580 feet (482 metres) in elevation, navigating uneven, rocky, and sometimes boggy terrain that may require you to push your bike. The journey, which typically takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes one-way, culminates at Harris Bay, where you can discover the unique Greek temple-style Bullough family mausoleum amidst the natural grandeur.

Planning your visit to the Isle of Rum requires some preparation, as private vehicles are largely restricted to residents, ensuring a peaceful and unspoiled cycling experience. The gravel track is often described as a landrover track, with some sections being well-maintained but others featuring ruts and rough surfaces. While suitable for gravel bikes, the demanding conditions mean that very good fitness is essential for this hard bike ride. Be prepared for the remote nature of the island and the lack of dedicated off-road mountain bike trails, as paths are generally rough.

What makes this route truly special is the unparalleled sense of wildness and remoteness it offers, making it a hidden gem of Scotland for those seeking a quiet gravel ride. As you cycle, you will encounter abundant wildlife, including friendly Highland Cattle and numerous red deer, adding to the island's unique preserved nature. The air is often filled with the fresh scent of pine trees as you pass through woodlands, and the island's rich history and diverse ecosystem contribute to its distinct character.
