    340m

Embark on the Rowburndale loop from Bridge House Cafe, Wray, a challenging 10.4-mile (16.7 km) hike through diverse landscapes in the Forest of Bowland. You will gain 1126 feet (343 metres) of elevation over approximately 4 hours and 41 minutes, making this a moderate route that requires good fitness. Expect varied terrain, from ancient woodlands and river valleys to open farmland, with steep roads and footpaths alongside hedgerows. Keep an eye out for small waterfalls and expansive views of the Lune Valley and distant Yorkshire Dales fells.

Planning your visit requires preparation; this route is classified as moderate to hard, so stout footwear and appropriate clothing are essential due to varied and sometimes steep terrain. You will encounter slippery rocky ledges, boulder hopping, and potentially fallen trees, especially near the River Roeburn. The trail starts from Bridge House Cafe in Wray, providing a convenient point for refreshments before or after your adventure.

This loop is ecologically significant, passing through one of Lancashire's largest ancient semi-natural woodlands, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. These woodlands support a rich diversity of breeding birds, including Wood Warbler and Pied Flycatcher. If you hike in late spring, you can witness impressive bluebell displays in areas like Outhwaite Wood and Bowskill Wood, adding a vibrant touch to the historical landscape.
