Embark on the River Wye loop from Miller's Dale, a moderate 4.2-mile (6.8 km) hike that takes about 1 hour and 52 minutes to complete, featuring 371 feet (113 metres) of elevation gain. This route blends natural beauty with historical engineering, guiding you through varied terrain from accessible paths to mountain trails. You will traverse lightly forested areas alongside the rushing River Wye and open farmland, passing through atmospheric old railway tunnels. The iconic Miller's Dale Viaducts offer striking views, while the Chee Dale segment provides a magical riverside ravine experience with stepping stones and rock outcrops.
For your visit, Miller's Dale Station serves as a convenient starting point, offering parking and a National Park Ranger Centre. The trail is suitable for most fitness levels, including families, though a degree of agility is beneficial for certain sections. Be aware that the Chee Dale stepping stones can be challenging and slick when wet; it is best to avoid this part if the river level is high. Proper walking footwear is essential, as some riverside sections and limestone bedrock can be muddy and slippery after rain. Also, note that parts of the Monsal Trail are shared with cyclists.
This trail is notable for its rich historical context, following sections of the historic Monsal Trail, a converted railway line. You will encounter remnants of the area's industrial past, including limestone quarries and limekilns, adding a unique dimension to your hike. The route is also celebrated for its biodiversity, with vibrant wildflowers like fireweed and orchids blooming in late spring and summer, and opportunities to spot wildlife such as dippers along the picturesque River Wye.
