Embark on the Frenchman's Creek loop from Helford, an easy 2.8-mile (4.4 km) hike that takes about 1 hour and 13 minutes to complete, with a gentle elevation gain of 264 feet (81 metres). This scenic route guides you through ancient woodlands, often vibrant with bluebells and wild garlic in spring, across open farmland, and along quiet village roads. You will discover picturesque creekside paths, offering stunning views over the Helford River and the tranquil Frenchman's Creek, and pass through the charming Helford village with its thatched cottages.
While generally considered easy, be prepared for varied surfaces, including some narrow paths cut into steep banks, especially near Pengwedhen, and a short but noticeable climb after Penarvon Cove. The trail can become muddy after rain, so proper walking footwear is recommended to ensure a comfortable experience. This loop is perfect for a leisurely outing, allowing you to immerse yourself in Cornwall's natural beauty and history.
This trail is famously the inspiration and setting for Daphne du Maurier's 1941 novel "Frenchman's Creek," lending a romantic and mysterious atmosphere to your walk. You will also encounter the historic Helford village, known for its medieval roots and past ties to fishing and smuggling. Keep an eye out for the tiny St Francis's Chapel at Pengwedhen and the secluded Penarvon Cove, offering a peaceful spot overlooking the river, all while enjoying the rich wildlife of the Helford River area.
