Embark on the Berneray Circular Walk via West Beach, a moderate hike spanning 9.4 miles (15.1 km) with an elevation gain of 414 feet (126 metres), typically completed in 3 hours and 57 minutes. This route offers a diverse experience, taking you across island roads, tracks, and paths, as well as extensive sandy beaches. You will traverse the magnificent West Beach, a three-mile stretch of white shell sand, and enjoy an easy ascent over Beinn Shleibhe, the island's highest point, for panoramic views.
While the paths are generally accessible, some sections can be wet and boggy, so good footwear is advisable. The trail is low-level but exposed, meaning you should prepare for varying weather conditions. As this is a circular walk, you can begin at several points around the island, with parking often available near the ferry terminal or community hall. Always check local information for any seasonal closures or specific access details before you set out.
The trail provides a comprehensive circuit of Berneray, showcasing its most iconic features. Beyond the stunning West Beach, you will encounter fertile machair grasslands and historical blackhouses, some of which are restored. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including a seal colony often seen basking on the rocks at Loch a' Bhàigh, and the possibility of spotting otters, adding to the unique charm of this Hebridean adventure.
