Embark on the Strumble Head Lighthouse loop, a moderate hike through the dramatic Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. This 7.0-mile (11.2 km) route, typically taking 3 hours and 13 minutes, offers rugged coastal terrain with paths of hard igneous rock and cliffs reaching up to 140 meters high. You will gain about 828 feet (252 metres) in elevation as you traverse maritime heath, bracken, and heather, leading to rocky coves. The iconic Strumble Head Lighthouse, perched on its own tiny island and connected by a small suspension bridge, provides a striking focal point and photo opportunity amidst the wild landscape.
Prepare for exposed conditions on this trail, especially if it's windy, as the path undulates along the cliffs. Sure-footedness is important due to the rugged terrain and some steep climbs, particularly when ascending to Garn Fawr. While generally accessible, the route includes footpaths, some mountain hiking paths, and short sections of road. The full loop requires good fitness, but the rewarding views make the effort worthwhile. Consider starting early to fully enjoy the coastal vistas and wildlife spotting opportunities.
Beyond the stunning scenery, this area is renowned for its exceptional wildlife. It is one of the best locations in Britain to spot cetaceans like porpoises and bottlenose dolphins, and you might even see sunfish or basking sharks. Grey seals are frequently observed in the rocky coves, and from late July through November, Strumble Head is a crucial vantage point for migrating seabirds. You will also encounter the historic Iron Age hillforts of Garn Fawr and Garn Fechan, adding a layer of history to your coastal adventure.
