    Running

Blencathera or Saddleback is a brilliant fell to run. Some of the ascent/descent routes are awesome scrambles and some are tough but steady trails. The views south across the Lake District are stunning!

Blencathra & Scales Tarn loop from Comb Beck Bridge

    7.15km

    01:22

    590m

    590m

Embark on a difficult jogging route that takes you up Blencathra, covering 4.4 miles (7.2 km) with a significant 1926 feet (587 metres) of elevation gain. This challenging loop is estimated to take around 1 hour and 21 minutes, making it ideal for experienced fell runners or strong hikers seeking a rugged adventure. As you ascend, you'll traverse moorland terrain, leading to the serene yet moody Scales Tarn, a glacial lake nestled below towering crags. The climb offers dramatic views throughout, culminating in panoramic vistas from the summit of Blencathra. From the top, you can spot iconic landmarks like Skiddaw and Derwent Water, with layers of fells stretching into the distance.

Before you set out, be aware that this route is considered difficult and includes Sharp Edge, a classic Grade 1 scramble. This section is exposed and can be dangerous, especially if conditions are wet, icy, snowy, or windy. If you have a fear of heights or lack sure-footedness and alpine experience, this part of the trail is not recommended for you. Parking is generally available near the Comb Beck Bridge trailhead, which serves as your starting point for this loop.

Scales Tarn itself is notably dark and often considered the coldest tarn in the Lake District, adding to the unique atmosphere of this ascent. The trail offers a chance to experience the raw beauty of the fells, from the rugged terrain to the expansive views. This route stands out for its combination of challenging physical demands and rewarding natural scenery, making it a memorable experience for those prepared for its rigors.
