Ben Vorlich Summit

Hiking

4.9

(77)

The higher of two mountains named Ben Vorlich, this magnificent peak rises immediately to the south of Loch Earn in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. In the very south of the Highlands, hiking up Ben Vorlich takes you to 3,232 feet (985 m) with astounding views across both its neighbouring peaks and the eastern foothills.

Ben Vorlich and its sister Stuc a’ Chroin come as a pair and a double Munro ascent is popular, summiting Stuc on the way down. While slightly lower, Stuc can be a difficult peak with scrambling and a significantly rockier nature. For an easier day, you can summit the wonderful Ben Vorlich and return via the same path.

A fantastically friendly climb

The most common hiking trail up Ben Vorlich is from the sweeping Loch Earn to the north. With a clear, gravel path, you’ll find yourself ambling through the beautiful Glen Vorlich, lush and green through the summer.

As you ascend, you can spot the majestic presence of mighty Ben Lawers on the northern horizon, often bathed in cloud. From the summit in summer, the Trossachs are fantastically verdant, their rocky bulks rising up to the west and south west. You’ll know when you’ve reached Ben Vorlich’s peak thanks to a trig point and a sudden yearning to continue onto Stuc a’ Chroin.

Exposed, weather conditions can change quickly on Ben Vorlich and even in summer, clouds, wind and rain can close in rapidly. Be prepared to change your plans should the conditions turn prohibitively sour and relish sunshine when it comes.

Campsites and other accommodation are plentiful in the immediate surroundings with Callander to the south being the largest nearby settlement.

    Hiking

Ben Vorlich is a popular Munro that's usually accessed from Loch Earn. The main reasons for its popularity are its proximity to the Central Belt and the views it gives you across the Southern Highlands. It is often linked with neighbouring Stùc a' Chroin, a route that inolves some tricky scrambling.

    Hiking

A good view point and fairly straight forward to reach. The summit is marked by a trig point.

    Hiking

Ben Vorlich is an extremely interesting mountain. The ascent is worthwhile - although it is not without effort. From here you can continue hiking to Stùc a' Chroin.

Embark on the Ben Vorlich and Stùc a' Chròin Loop, a challenging hike that takes you through the rugged beauty of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. This demanding route covers 9.1 miles (14.6 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 3420 feet (1043 metres). As you ascend, you'll experience varied terrain, from boggy lower slopes to rocky mountain paths, culminating in expansive views of central Scotland and Loch Earn from Ben Vorlich Summit. Plan for a full day out, as this difficult hike typically takes around 6 hours and 40 minutes to complete.

Before you set out, be aware that conditions can change rapidly on this mountain trail. While generally accessible, winter months transform the route into a much more hazardous undertaking, requiring specialist equipment like an ice-axe and crampons; it's only recommended for expert mountaineers during this time. Always wear sturdy, waterproof footwear to handle the often wet and eroded sections, especially lower down. Check the weather forecast carefully and start early to allow ample daylight for your adventure.

This loop offers the rewarding experience of bagging two Munros in a single outing, making it a notable challenge for peak baggers. Beyond the physical accomplishment, the trail provides a chance to observe the distinct characteristics of each Munro's landscape. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; you might even spot ospreys or black grouse, particularly during the vibrant autumn season when the natural surroundings are at their most colorful.
