Ben Lui Summit

One of the most spectacular sights in the Southern Highlands of Scotland. Towering in regal fashion above Tyndrum’s other Munros, hikes to Ben Lui have long been a favourite of mountaineers and hill walkers alike.

Walking routes to Ben Lui are especially beautiful from the east alongside the River Cononish, which is infamous for the site of the Cononish gold mine. Here the immense Corie Gaothach steals the show, embraced by two fine mountain ridges that curve down from Ben Lui’s high throne. It looks especially splendid, positively alpine even, in winter when the walls become winter climbing classics. Any approach from this direction involves a long walk in, worth bearing in mind if time is short.

The queen of the Southern Highlands

Fortunately, Ben Lui’s summit is the meeting point of five ridges, meaning there are plenty of ways for you to get to grips with the mountain and connect it with neighbouring Munros. It is only the ridges enclosing Coire Gaothach that require scrambling, so in the right conditions, hiking on Ben Lui can be accessed by the whole family.

Your reward on the summit is a sensational panorama of the Western Highlands, particularly to the Ben Cruachan group and south to the Arrochar Alps. To the north, the peaks of Glen Etive, Glencoe, the Mamores and Ben Nevis and the Grey Corries form a grand sea of mountain ridges.

The shortest approaches are from the car park in Glen Lochy, whilst accommodation can be found in Tyndrum, Crianlarich and Dalmally. Winter conditions make Ben Lui a very serious mountain indeed; only those with mountaineering skills and equipment are advised to attempt its slopes at this time.

    Hiking

I've heard Ben Lui described as the Queen of Scottish mountains; it's certainly one of the grandest peaks in the Southern Highlands. Its best feature is undoubtedly its corrie-bitten northeast …

    Hiking

At 1130m Ben Lui is one of the highest Munro in the south western highlands, and probably one with the best views.
It’s corries are spectacular and it’s ridges offer some scrambling. Usually approached from Glen Lochy car park.
