A really fascinating structure: go inside and close the door. Allow your eyes time to adjust to the darkness then watch the waves from the lake as they’re reflected onto the floor of the chamber! Really incredible to see.

Embark on an easy 2.5-mile (4.0 km) hike around the Wave Chamber loop from Kielder Water, a route that takes approximately 1 hour and 2 minutes with an elevation gain of 115 feet (35 metres). This trail combines scenic lakeside paths with sections winding through both deciduous and coniferous woodland, offering diverse views of Kielder Water, the largest man-made lake in Northern Europe. You will experience a mix of terrain, from paved sections to natural paths, leading you to the unique Wave Chamber on the Belling peninsula.

While the overall Kielder Water area features the multi-purpose Lakeside Way, be aware that sections of this specific Wave Chamber loop can be rough and muddy, with a couple of steep climbs. These parts are not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies, so plan accordingly. You might also encounter fallen trees, especially after storms, requiring careful navigation. For the best experience of the Wave Chamber itself, aim to visit in the middle of the afternoon on a bright, breezy day, allowing your eyes a few minutes to adjust to the low light inside.

The highlight of this trail is undoubtedly the Wave Chamber, a unique beehive-shaped camera obscura created by environmental artist Chris Drury in 1996. Inside, a mirror and lens project a moving image of the lake's waves onto the floor, while the walls echo the sounds of the water, creating an immersive sensory experience. This installation is part of the extensive Kielder Water and Forest Park art trail, which features over 40 sculptures. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as roe deer, goldcrests, ospreys, red squirrels, and water voles along the route.
