Earl’s Seat is a gentle moorland summit to the east of the distinctive and popular peaks of Dumgoyne and Dumfoyn. It rises proudly to 1,896 feet (578 m) as the highest point in the Campsie Fells, a range of rolling hills with volcanic origins.

The region’s beauty and its proximity to population centres make it a popular region for adventurous souls. Earl’s Seat and its neighbours make for an ideal family outing, without the logistical and physical challenge of the nearby Highlands to the north.

The highest point in the picturesque Campsie Fells to the north of Glasgow

A popular approach to Earl’s Seat begins in Glengoyne, just below the conical hump of Dumgoyne, which you can incorporate into your day. There’s a much-loved whisky distillery, which is recommended for after, not before, an adventure here. Bear in mind the distillery parking is for patrons only, though there is more parking on the layby after the junction with the A81.

Other routes approach from the south via Owsen Hill, or from the east via Holehead and Hart Hill. The summit region of Earl’s Seat is broad but for its northern escarpment, which drops away sharply, hence the lack of approaches from this direction. Whatever route you take, expect grassy paths and tussocky, often wet, ground. The views from the trig point are excellent, particularly northwest towards the Munros above Loch Lomond.

You can find a few accommodation options in Glengoyne. If you’re out of luck, head north to the village of Drymen or there’s obviously Glasgow to the south.

    Hiking

Mostly rideable except for a few steep ramps and some short boggy bits. Stunning views. Goes from track to grassy path half way up.

    Running

At 578m Earl's Seat is the highest point of the Campsies which makes it a great target for a run in this area. The views are great, it's got a nice trig point and although mountainous it's not that steep.
Normally run from Strathblane in the south or from Dumgoyne in the west.
