    Road cycling

If you like a challenge thin this is a decent climb to add to the route. Apparentley used in the National Hill Climb Championships recently we hit it in the last 20mls of our ride on tired legs but once at the top it opens out into some fantastic rolling roads on the way home.

Embark on a challenging road cycling journey from Newcastle, covering 53.2 miles (85.7 km) with a significant 3602 feet (1098 metres) of elevation gain. This difficult route, typically completed in 4 hours and 7 minutes, quickly leaves the city behind for the peaceful Lanchester Valley. As you climb into the North Pennines AONB, the landscape transforms into rugged moorland and wild fells, offering expansive views, including the scenic vista of Derwent Reservoir from Muggleswick. You will experience a dramatic shift from urban fringes to tranquil countryside and then to demanding, open terrain.

This route starts from Newcastle, a city well-served by various public transport links, making it easy to reach the trailhead. If you are driving, ample parking is available in and around the city centre. Be prepared for substantial elevation changes throughout the ride, which contribute to its difficult rating. Always check local conditions before you set out, especially concerning weather in the exposed moorland sections.

This road cycling adventure stands out for its dramatic contrast in scenery, transitioning from urban surroundings to the serene Lanchester Valley and then into the wild beauty of the North Pennines AONB. Keep an eye out for the iconic Angel of the North near the start or end of your ride, a striking landmark that signals your departure from or return to the city. The route offers a true test of endurance and rewards you with panoramic vistas across attractive dales and fells.
