Embark on a challenging yet rewarding road cycling adventure with the Loch Tummel & Loch Rannoch loop from Pitlochry. This moderate 64.8-mile (104.4 km) route, typically completed in 4 hours and 33 minutes, takes you through the stunning Scottish Highlands, featuring a significant 2859 feet (871 metres) of elevation gain. You'll experience a mix of well-paved roads and some rougher sections, with amazing views along the Loch Tummel Scenic Road. Make sure to stop at Queen's View for iconic vistas across Loch Tummel and towards the distinctive mountain of Schiehallion. The remote countryside offers panoramic scenery, especially around Loch Rannoch, where you might even find sandy beaches on its north shore. You will also enjoy fine views of Schiehallion on your return journey.
Your journey begins and ends in the charming town of Pitlochry, which offers various amenities including shops, cafes, and restaurants for your convenience. The route is best suited for cyclists with a good level of fitness due to its hilly nature and undulating sections. Consider making a stop at the Escape Route Café & Bike Shop in Pitlochry, a well-known and bike-friendly establishment, perfect for refreshments or any last-minute cycling services you might need before or after your ride. The trail is generally rideable, but be prepared for some potentially rougher surfaces, particularly along the southern shore of Loch Tummel.
This loop is renowned for its picturesque scenery and varied terrain, encompassing part of the Loch Tummel National Scenic Area. Beyond the natural beauty, you'll encounter notable features like the historic Port-na-Craig Suspension Bridge, which offers a scenic entry or exit point for Pitlochry, allowing you to avoid the main road. The prominent mountain Schiehallion serves as an impressive backdrop for much of the ride, adding to the dramatic landscape. This area is also known as a part of the popular Etape Caledonia route, highlighting its significance in the Scottish cycling community.
