The Allean Forest loop from Queen's View offers a moderate jogging experience through varied terrain and stunning views. This 3.6-mile (5.9 km) route, with an elevation gain of 499 feet (152 metres), typically takes around 43 minutes to complete. You will jog through a large coniferous plantation, featuring Douglas fir and Scots Pine, alongside rich ancient woodlands. A major highlight is the magnificent views across Loch Tummel from several vantage points, especially near Queen's View, where you can see distant peaks of Glencoe on a clear day. Expect mostly firm gravel surfaces, but also some uneven grassy sections and potentially muddy patches, particularly on the Clachan Trail, which includes some fairly steep slopes and a steady climb. This makes the route suitable for those with good fitness.
The trail starts near Queen's View, a well-known landmark offering one of Scotland's most iconic vistas. You can find full facilities, including a cafe, at the nearby Queen's View Visitor Centre. For those starting directly within Allean Forest, composting toilets are available at the Allean car park. The trails are managed by Forestry Scotland, ensuring well-maintained paths. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, making it a rewarding jog year-round.
Beyond the natural beauty, this loop is notable for its historical significance. As you jog, you can discover an 18th-century black house or 'clachan', a partly restored farming settlement where you can step inside one of the simple cottages. You will also find the remains of an 8th-century Pictish ring fort, an ancient homestead and lookout point offering commanding views over Loch Tummel. This highlights over a thousand years of human activity in the area, making the trail a rewarding experience for joggers seeking both physical activity and cultural immersion.
