Lochbuie Castle & Beach loop — Isle of Mull

    30m

Embark on the Lochbuie Castle & Beach loop, an easy 3.6-mile (5.7 km) hike on the Isle of Mull that takes approximately 1 hour and 28 minutes to complete, with a gentle elevation gain of just 84 feet (26 metres). This family-friendly route guides you along accessible paths, past shimmering beaches like Laggan Sands, and through ancient woodlands where fallow deer often graze. You will experience diverse scenery, from dramatic cliffs to open moorland, with views across Loch Buie and the sea.

This trail is largely flat and features well-marked tracks, making it suitable for all fitness levels. While generally easy, good boots are recommended, especially if you plan to explore off the main path where the ground can be wet. The Old Post Office, now a small café with outdoor seating and sea views, often serves as a convenient starting and finishing point, offering refreshments before or after your walk.

The Lochbuie area is rich in history and natural beauty, providing a tranquil escape. Along the route, you will encounter the ruins of Moy Castle, a 15th-century tower and former home of Clan Maclaine, located right on the beach. Other notable landmarks include the 18th-century Lochbuie House, St. Kilda's Church, and a historic mausoleum. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including eagles and otters, as you enjoy the stunning coastal and moorland views.
