    Mountain biking

Advice I had from Cycle Experience (Cycle hire and tour company) was to avoid main road because there are always offroads that crisscross the whole New Forest. From Brockenhurst to Lymington, I could have avoided all main roads, so please take that into account when planning route. I was given a paper map. At first I laughted at it, but it was useful to check waypoints (pub, cafe, church).

Past Lymington, I took the wrong turn, so I had to ride on the main road A337. If possible, go to marshland along the coast that leads to Keyhaven.

Embark on a moderate mountain biking adventure through the Pennington Marshes loop from Lymington, a route that spans 18.1 miles (29.2 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 467 feet (142 metres). This ride typically takes around 1 hour and 46 minutes to complete, offering diverse coastal scenery and varied terrain. You will cycle along a sea wall, enjoying panoramic views across the Solent with the Isle of Wight visible in the distance, before heading inland to explore forest gravel tracks and bridleways within the New Forest National Park. Expect gently undulating coastal plains and sea wall paths, transitioning to quiet roads through ancient woodlands and open heathlands.

This trail is suitable for mountain bikers of various fitness levels, with its moderate difficulty making it accessible for a wide range of riders. While some segments are unpaved, the route largely features mostly paved surfaces and gravel tracks, which can have puddles when wet. The technical difficulty is generally low, corresponding to S0-S1 on the Single Track Scale, meaning the paths are easily accessible and suitable for all skill levels. You can enjoy a longer, scenic ride without encountering extreme technical challenges.

The Pennington Marshes loop is a true highlight for its unique blend of coastal and New Forest environments. It's a significant wildlife haven, particularly for birdwatching, as you pass numerous lagoons within the marsh area, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Look out for egrets, shelducks, curlews, and herons. The area also holds historical significance, with remnants of salt production, a vital industry here for over 600 years, still observable along the route.
