Whiteford Sands loop from Llanmadoc — Gŵyr / Gower

    60m

Embark on the Whiteford Sands loop from Llanmadoc, a moderate 5.0-mile (8.1 km) hike with 196 feet (60 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 2 hours and 6 minutes to complete. This route guides you through a diverse landscape of woodlands, sand dunes, and salt marshes, leading to the expansive Whiteford Sands. You will experience panoramic views of the Loughor Estuary and the distant coastline, with the unique Whiteford Lighthouse standing as a prominent landmark at the edge of the sea.

When planning your visit, be aware that the trail includes undulating paths over dunes and sections with potentially soft, sinking sand, especially near the Whiteford Lighthouse. If you wish to walk out to the lighthouse, checking tide times is essential, as tides come in rapidly. The trail starts from Llanmadoc, offering a convenient loop for hikers.

This area is part of the Gŵyr/Gower Peninsula, designated the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956. The Whiteford Lighthouse is a unique decommissioned cast-iron structure from 1865, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the last of its kind in the UK. You will also traverse Whiteford Burrows, a National Trust nature reserve known for its rich wildlife, including wild horses, and the Cwm Ivy Marsh, a dynamic tidal saltmarsh perfect for birdwatching.
