Adventures on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
Seen from the south and west, Ben Lomond’s dominant form is a graceful one of sweeping ridges rising from forested shores. The two principle walking routes to Ben Lomond take advantage of these features, creating accessible ways up for the whole family. From the Munros of the Arrochar Alps, its apex is a striking cone, hinting at the prominence the summit enjoys.
From the east, Ben Lomond is a more intimidating beast, with steep crags that plunge downwards and vicious-looking corries. Ascents from this side are rough, adventurous and pathless.
Rowardennan is a great base for hikes, with various accommodation options. Another option is to stay in Luss, Tarbet or Inversnaid before adding a journey on the Loch Lomond ferry to your adventure and accessing the trails in this way.
Wild camping is not permitted in certain areas around the base of Ben Lomond. Check the national park website for more information. It is the most popular of all the Munros in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, so steering clear of peak times may be necessary to avoid the crowds. In winter conditions, the slopes become the preserve of equipped and skilled mountaineers only.
