The second-highest point in south east England, hikes up Leith Hill put you above the verdant natural haven of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You don’t have to trek all the way to Berkshire’s Walbury Hill for the record either, simply climb to the top of the hill’s tower and only birds will be higher.

30 miles (41 km) south of London, Leith Hill rises to 965 feet (294 m) and offers spectacular views of the patchwork fields and woodlands that flow out in all directions. On a clear day with binoculars or through the tower’s telescopes, you can see both the London Eye to the north and the English Channel to the south.

For the enjoyment of all

Part of the Greensand Ridge, a vast escarpment stretching across south east England, hiking trails up Leith Hill take you through beautiful surrounding woodlands. On its southern slopes, wander through Leith Hill Place Woods, with its phenomenal autumn colours and exquisite summer birdsong.

On the south western slopes you can hike through dense rhododendron woods, a glorious sight when in bloom. As an added treat, look out for the woods’ vast redwoods. You can’t miss them as they stand rust-coloured and magisterial above all but the hill itself.

Hiking trails up to Leith Hill’s magnificent summit are steep in sections and can be muddy after rainfall and in winter. Nevertheless, it’s a fantastic adventure for families and the tower is the cherry on top. Built in the 18th century by Richard Hull of Leith Hill Place, the nearby manor, it was constructed not just for its owner but for anyone to enjoy the English countryside.

You’ll find several car parks close by and a café at the tower. Two youth hostels are in the area along with several campsites and plenty of hotel accommodation.
