The uncompromising mountain terrain of the Isle of Arran boasts four superb Corbetts. Hikes to Caisteal Abhail take you to the northernmost, a characterful peak which is the central apex of four ridges. When seen from the Ayrshire coast, it assumes the form of a recumbent figure, earning the vista the title of ‘the Sleeping Warrior’.

Walking routes to Caisteal Abhail usually begin from Glen Sannox. Horseshoe routes are possible, taking in Goatfell and Cir Mhòr, though this requires some tricky scrambling and a solid head for heights.

The mountain is characterised by ‘the Witch’s Step’, a great gash and scrambling obstacle on its eastern ridge, and its distinctive summit tors. From the top is an excellent vantage of pointy Cir Mhòr and parent Goatfell.

The Isle of Arran is most commonly accessed by ferry from Ardrossan and Brodick and Sannox are the best bases for accommodation.

Its height and island location mean that Caisteal Abhail does not catch winter conditions as often as many mainland mountains. However, when it does, the use of an ice axe and crampons are necessary.
