Ben Stack

Hiking

5.0

The classically pointed profile of Ben Stack is one of the finest sights in the far northern reaches of the Scottish Highlands. An isolated peak of great prominence, hikes to Ben Stack reward you with astounding views of Sutherland’s unique landscape.

Unlike some peaks in the region, the ascent is particularly short and poses few technical problems. Any adventure this far north is unforgettable and by hiking Ben Stack you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Awe-inspiring views on an isolated pyramidal peak

Walking routes to Ben Stack usually begin direct from the A838 and ascend in a straight, northwesterly line all the way to the summit. The initial section is notoriously boggy, so make sure you pack waterproof boots.

As you climb, the knock and lochan landscape reveals itself; vibrant, crumpled moorland is interspersed by glistening lochs of all shapes and sizes. Alternatives tackle the peak from the northern end of Loch Stack and are steeper and more strenuous, making use of an old stalkers’ path.

Water is evident everywhere with the loch directly below and then, as you crest the summit, a panorama of the island studded, broken coastline rises to meet you. On sunny days, when the sea sparkles all the way to the horizon, it is surely the far north at its very best. The rocky ridges of ancient Foinaven and Arkle sweep up from the moorland to the north and the unmistakable shapes of Assynt’s inselberg peaks inhabit the south.

Guest houses, hotels and campsites can be found in Scourie and Rhiconich, both within driving distance of the mountain. The whole region is a treasure chest of wild camping gold.

Due to its position near the sea and its modest height, Ben Stack rarely hoards full winter conditions but may require the use of an ice axe and crampons on the occasion that it does.

    Hiking

Ben Stack is a nice pointy mountain, standing at 721 m. It's classified as a Fiona.

The classic walk is up the fairly pathless and sometimes boggy south-eastern ridge. The reward is a great distinct summit and far-reaching views.

    Hiking

The summit of Ben Stack is a wonderful viewpoint, Quinaq and Assynt to the south; Arkle and Foinaven across Loch Stack to the north; the coast to the west. This is a fine little mountain in an isolated lonely part of the far north west of Scotland.
