Lying just south of Loch Tay, this lumbering hulk of a Munro holds far more secrets than many give it credit for. What hiking Ben Chonzie lacks in technical intrigue it more than makes up for in wildlife, views and the sheer joy of summiting another Munro.

Hikes up Ben Chonzie take you to a hefty 3,054 feet (931 m) with both straightforward and more challenging paths to choose from. The easiest route is a clear track for most of the way, followed by a grassy ridgewalk. This makes it great if you’re after your first Munro.

A perfect Munro for wildlife spotting

Each season brings new beauty to Ben Chonzie hikes. Spring sees snowmelt and mountain hares, still white from winter, cautiously foraging on the flat summit. Summer brings lush, vibrant shades of green to the valleys and mountainsides with grazing sheep and chortling streams.

The colours in autumn turn the peak into a stunning mixture of oranges, browns, greens and goldens. You can watch out for deer, but they’re harder to see against such a backdrop. Instead look up for buzzards circling gently.

The summit is marked by a roofless stone shelter, ideal for a photo and a snack out of the wind. The enormous Loch Turret Reservoir shines to the south and you can look north to spy the magnificent Lawers range.

This mountain is majestic on a sunny day but conditions can change rapidly so always hike prepared and keep an eye on the sky. More experienced hikers can choose a western approach, with crags and steeper sections to navigate.

Find parking at Invergeldie and the Loch Turret dam. Campsites and other accommodation can be found in Comrie and Crieff.

It is possible to ride all the way to the summit.
The summit plateau is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific interest) for the flora and fauna. Riding along the plateau to the summit is fantastic, the views are stunning.
