Bynack More Summit

Hiking

5.0

(23)

A mighty Munro to the north east of Cairn Gorm, hikes up Bynack More are thoroughly enjoyable, with clear trails and fantastic views. Located in the Cairngorms National Park, this peak is in true wilderness territory, where long walk-ins are standard.

With a summit standing at 3,580 feet (1,090 m), climbing Bynack More is no easy feat but neither is it technical. Many hikers begin at Glenmore Lodge to the north west but multi-day adventures can start from the south at Linn of Dee. Visually, this mountain is something of an eye-catching fellow, with monumental rock outcrops along its spine as well as the Barns of Bynack, giant granite tors littering its slopes.

Rocks and roaring views

A stone’s throw from Cairn Gorm, hiking trails up Bynack More place you amongst the true giants of the national park and the views are stunning, even from the valleys as you walk to the mountain base.

You can tackle Bynack More in one day from Glenmore Lodge or spend the night at Ryvoan bothy to get an early start already on the trail. Incidentally, An Lochan Uaine on the approach to Ryvoan from Glenmore is a particularly astounding, turquoise lake, well worth a dip on the return journey.

For multi-day adventures from the south, the basic Ford of Avon Refuge is another overnight spot on the way to Bynack More. Once you’ve picked your route, walked your way in and ascended this great mountain, jaw-dropping views will reward your effort. All around, the majestic, grand Cairngorms rise all around, with the Spey Valley catching the eye to the north west.

On the mountain itself, the granite tors are somewhat of an attraction all by themselves. In summer, midges can be problematic, particularly in Glenmore Forest at the start, but sights of reindeer and ptarmigan are enough to send the soul soaring. In the colder months, conditions can be treacherous and limited to only the most experienced winter mountaineers.

    Hiking

Bynack More is a 1,090m Munro mountain in the Scottish Highlands. We approached it in September 2019 from the northeastern shores of Loch Avon, after descending Beinn Mheadhoin. Bynack More was to be the last Munro in a 3.5 day expedition, bagging 14 Munro mountains in the Cairngorms National Park. The summit ridge of Bynack More features a series of granite tors which have been likened to the spine of an ancient dragon.
