Just a flapjack’s throw from the mighty Ben Nevis, Aonach Mòr rises from this tremendous mountain landscape to a height of 4,006 feet (1,221 m). The highest point on a long, straight ridge, this majestic mountain is a Munro and you can summit neighbouring Aonach Beag too, if you’re looking to bag two lofty peaks in one day.

Aonach Mòr is most easily summited by first taking a gondola up the mountainside from the Nevis Ski and Mountain Centre, which occupies the ridge’s north slopes. If you’re after a long adventure, you can ascend from the Glen Nevis Valley instead. No matter how you reach the top, the views are astounding and this peak is a true achievement.

The views on adventures in this area are stupendous every step of the way in clear weather. In the valley, these Scottish giants rise imperiously above you and as you ascend, their phenomenal bulks become more and more apparent. The routes are boggy, rocky, steep and pathless in varying sections, and solid hill walking experience is required for a comfortable and safe ascent.

When you reach the top, you’ll find a long, narrow grass plateau with a summit cairn in the centre. Look southeast to see Càrn Mòr Deag and Ben Nevis behind it. North, the Great Glen and Leanachan Forest appear between mountains and south, the Mamores reach up to the sky. Every direction brings truly majestic views.

Aonach Mòr is easiest to ascend in the summer months but is still accessible during winter, for those with the right experience and equipment. The mountain is never warm, and wearing appropriate clothing for the extreme environment is essential. It’s not a technically challenging ascent, but it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Dogs can ride the gondola, should you want to bring your four-legged friend.

    Hiking

Aonach Mor is a 4,006-foot (1,221 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. It is often climbed alongside Aonach Beag. Despite Aonach Mor translating as Big Ridge (and Aonach Beag translating to Little Ridge), Aonach Mor is actually the smaller of the two.

Unfortunately again not an optimal day. It was cold and the visibility was only temporary. A nice change from the hustle and bustle of Ben Nevis.

Not as crowded as the big neighbor.
