Its location gives it a magnificent panorama from its large summit cairn. From the desolate, watery expanse of Rannoch Moor, backed by the guardian peaks of the West Highlands with Ben Nevis rising above all else, to the mighty Crianlarich and Lawers groups to the south and southeast.
An excellent Munro on the eastern fringes of Rannoch Moor
The quickest routes to Meall Buidhe’s summit begin from the dam on the eastern end of Lochan Diamh. With a starting elevation of around 1,400 feet (430 m), an ascent from here is not as strenuous as most Munros. Accommodation is few and far between until the small, scenic village of Kenmore at the head of Loch Tay, while there are further options to the east in the market town of Aberfeldy.
Perhaps the finest expedition to Meall Buidhe is a loop of beautiful Lochan Diamh, taking in the Munro summit of Stuchd an Lochain and the superb Corbett of Sròn a’ Choire Chnapanaich en route. This is a remote and adventurous outing that rewards with a sense of isolation and serenity, though it can be boggy underfoot, particularly when you come across peat hags.
