Beinn Sgulaird Summit

Standing by itself in the west of Scotland, hikes up Beinn Sgulaird whisk you to three summits, each with some of the best views in the country. The true summit is marked by a cairn and found at 3,074 feet (937 m), making it a Munro with a lengthy traverse that lends itself to enjoyable circular walks.

This wild and remote mountain holds a steep ascent and no matter whether you start from the north or the south, you’ll be beginning from almost sea level. Tracks and paths form the early hiking trails before leading to a pathless ascent over grassy, rugged terrain. With outstanding scenery in every direction and no technical sections, hiking up Beinn Sgulaird is strenuous but very achievable.

Hiking in the wilderness to tremendous views

Lying roughly north to south between Loch Etive and Loch Creran, a clear day is the goal for your Beinn Sgulaird adventure. While hiking Munros in cloud can be atmospheric, this mighty mountain is famed for its extraordinary summit views. As much as is possible in western Scotland, try to pick a haze-free day.

You can park in the south, at Druimavuic or the north, at Elleric. This lumpy, grassy mountain is strenuous but usually easy underfoot. Reaching the undulating ridge offers fine opportunities to pause but it’s Beinn Sgulaird’s highest summit that is the place to rest and marvel.

Scotland holds plenty of marvellous views but perhaps none quite so perfect as from Beinn Sgulaird. Look north across the gigantic peaks to Ben Nevis. Lismore, Mull, Colonsay and Jura dance on the water to the south west and, in the east, Ben Starav looms just a stone’s throw away.

Winter mountaineers will relish snowy conditions, particularly on the rare, clear wintery days. Weather is often changeable but if the Munro’s on your side, the cloud will clear for a summit view.

    Hiking

Beinn Sgulaird is a 937m Munro mountain in the Scottish Highlands. It's a solitary Munro that can't really be linked easily with other Munros. I climbed it from Druimavuic where the route builds in quite a few ups and downs before you reach the summit.

    Running

A wild and remote Munro, sitting 937 metres high above Glen Creran and Glen Etive.

It's often ascended via the south Ridge, a rough and almost alpine style mountain trail, which presents some great, techy, trail-running terrain.
