Beinn Chabhair

Hiking

5.0

(17)

On the drive along Glen Falloch towards Crianlarich, heads are often turned to the right where a green, knobbly ridge rises above the woodland, promising great adventures. Hikes to Beinn Chabhair deliver on this promise, taking you to the most western of the marvellous Crianlarich Munros.

Walking routes to Beinn Chabhair often set out from under the shadow of the birch and hawthorn trees that adorn the lower environs of Glen Falloch. A detour to the beautiful Falls of Falloch is a great option before or after your ascent. Be warned, the lower slopes can be boggy, so waterproof boots are recommended. Once amongst the crags and ridges, the mountain can also be linked to An Caisteal via a windswept, high bealach.

A fine Munro of rocky knolls and superb views of Loch Long

The summit’s surroundings contain many rocky outcrops and constitute some rough hiking. Finding a path through the knolls is entirely at your discretion, but once you arrive at the summit, a precariously perched cairn and a splendid vista awaits.

It’s a majestic viewpoint for gazing down the barrel of Loch Long, whilst bonnie Loch Lomond stretches away to the south. The bristling Arrochar Alps watch on silently to the south west and the parallel ridges of the Crianlarich group line up pleasingly in the east.

Crianlarich and Ardlui are the obvious bases, whilst there are a range of accommodation options along Glen Falloch. There are wild camping restrictions in this region, check the national park website for more information.

In winter conditions Beinn Chabhair can be very challenging; it is best left to experienced and equipped mountaineers.

    Hiking

Beinn Chabhair is a 3,061-foot (933 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. I'd describe it as lumpy bumpy knobbly bobbly! I climbed it from An Caisteal as an out and back before moving on to Beinn a' Chròin, but it's commonly walked from the southern end of Glen Falloch.

The Beinn Chabhair loop offers a difficult hiking experience, covering 10.3 miles (16.6 km) with a substantial elevation gain of 2987 feet (910 metres). You can expect to spend around 6 hours and 16 minutes on this challenging route. The trail starts with a steep, eroded path through woodland, following the impressive Beinglas Falls. As you ascend, the terrain transitions from grassy slopes to craggy sections and rocky humps, especially on the summit ridge. Be prepared for boggy and muddy areas, particularly in the moorland after the waterfalls, which contribute to the trail's demanding nature. From the summit, you will enjoy panoramic views across Loch Lomond, Loch Long, and the surrounding mountain groups.

This strenuous hike requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy shoes. Waterproof footwear is highly recommended due to the boggy conditions you will encounter. Navigation can be tricky in some pathless sections and around rocky outcrops, so bring a map and compass or a reliable GPS device. The trail begins near The Drovers Inn, a historic Scottish pub, which makes for a convenient starting point and a unique place to visit before or after your hike. Always check weather conditions before you go, as the mountain environment can change quickly.
