Ben Klibreck

Hiking

5.0

(10)

Towering above its neighbouring hills and mountains, the hiking trails up Ben Klibreck will take you to the top of the second most-northerly Munro. At 3,156 feet (962 m), it’s not the height that makes Ben Klibreck overly special, it’s the setting. Sitting in the midst of incredibly wild moorland, the views are like something out of a fantasy novel with hardly any signs of humanity.

You’ll find several route options to summit this mighty Munro and it’s wise to choose based on the weather conditions, particularly as there are many pathless sections, bogs and peaty areas. A popular choice is to follow the ridgeline which offers a lovely hike at altitude, making the most of the staggering views.

An island of rock rising from empty wilderness

Many of Scotland’s cherished mountains provide breathtaking views of deep mountain valleys and the neighbouring summits, rising in all directions. Hikes up Ben Klibreck differ dramatically as the mountain stands essentially alone in the midst of Sutherland’s exquisite wilderness. As you walk across the windblown moor on your way to the Meall nan Con summit, it feels as though you’re completely alone in the world. If you’re lucky enough to experience a cloud inversion, by the time you reach the summit cairn you’ll be standing in full sunshine with a white, fluffy blanket below you.

In good weather conditions, you can reach the peak of Ben Klibreck throughout the year but sturdy waterproof boots are essential due to boggy sections. A snowy smattering in low winter light makes for beautiful scenery but only winter mountaineers should ascend in difficult conditions.

You’ll find a hotel in Altnaharra and more in Tongue to the north. Lairg, to the south, also has food and accommodation.

    Hiking

Ben Klibreck is a Munro mountain of 962m in height in the northern Scottish Highlands. In fact, Ben Klibreck is Scotland's second most northerly Munro mountain (the most northerly being Ben Hope). Ben Klibreck is a challenging mountain to climb from the west due to the amount of pathless terrain. Meall nan Con is the highest point on Ben Klibreck (the Munro summit). There is a shelter cairn and a broken trig point on the summit.

    Hiking

A wonderfully empty and wild place. Will be amazed if you see anyone else up there.
