Reverend Robert Steven Hawker was the vicar at Morwenstow Church from 1834. Both compassionate and eccentric, he was known locally as Parson Hawker and built this hut from driftwood where he would smoke opium and write poetry. His most famous work was 'The Song of the Western Men'. Although published anonymously, Charles Dickens named him as the author.
