With a summit height of 2,502 feet (763 m), hikes up Wetherlam place you amongst magnificent mountain scenery with expansive views of the Coniston Fells, Little Langdale and the patchwork, green valleys that make the Lake District such a charming place.

Large and rambling with intermediate tops and intriguing crags, you’ll find a variety of hiking trails up Wetherlam, each offering its own splendid views. A fell suitable for most hillwalkers, you can easily turn your hike into a large loop walk, taking in two of the mountain’s ridges. Connected to the neighbouring fells by the popular Swirl How, you can even add the Old Man to your day if you’re feeling enthusiastic.

A rocky climb to one of the famous Coniston Fells

Begin your hike from the Duddon valley, Coniston or Yewdale Beck. Alternatively, you can arrive from one of the many other fells on longer walks. During late spring and summer, Wetherlam’s hiking trails are a mixture of rocky paths, grassy terrain and craggy ground. In winter, the mountain can see significant snowfall, making it an enjoyable challenge for those with the appropriate experience and equipment.

Black Sails is a subsidiary top and very much a part of Wetherlam. It’s a great crag to add onto your walk. It’s also a Hewitt, should you find yourself collecting them, whilst Wetherlam is both a Hewitt and a Wainwright.

Coniston is an obvious base for hiking in this area but there are plenty of campsites and other accommodations dotted throughout the surrounding valleys. Skelwith Bridge and Ambleside are also nearby, a little to the north.

    Running

A giant, sprawling mountain at 2,503 ft (763 m), there are great views from the summit across to the Old Man of Coniston or over towards Langdale. Despite its size, Wetherlam is very runnable - it's not very steep but some sections are quite rocky.

    Hiking

Not to be confused with Middle Earth’s Weathertop, this satellite of the Coniston Fells is nevertheless a fantastical hill. A textures mismatch of rugged crag and expansive fellside, Wetherlam is a swirl of spurs and coves threaded by gills and becks. The sort of peak you could spend an age on, oblivious to the passage of time.

    Hiking

My favourite ascent of Wetherlam is via Wetherlam Edge, a great scramble!
