Spidean a' Choire Leith (Liathach)

Hiking

4.8

(26)

The mountain behemoth of Liathach is the central and most awesome of Torridon’s terrific trio, which also includes beautiful Beinn Alligin and sprawling Beinn Eighe. Hikes to Spidean a’Choire Leith take you to a towering quartzite dome, the highest summit on Liathach’s massive, ancient ridge system. The views are wonderful, particularly along the main ridge to the Am Fasarinen Pinnacles and to the second Munro summit, Mullach an Rathain.

Liathach’s high fortress rises almost sheer from the valley floor in intimidating layers of striated sandstone. You might be forgiven for thinking there can’t possibly be any walking routes to Spidean a’Choire Leith, however, there are breaches in the southern flanks that allow you access to the high ramparts.

It is possible to bag Spidean a’Choire Leith in an out and back mission, but if you’re hankering for a full ridge traverse, the challenge of the Am Fasarinen Pinnacles lies between the two Munros. Sensationally exposed, it’s a grade two scramble if taken head on, though there are bypass paths that cling precariously to the cliff edges. Not one for the kids.

There is a hotel, a youth hostel, a campsite and plenty of cottages around the village of Torridon, giving you plenty of accommodation options. A traverse of Liathach is one of Britain’s greatest mountaineering challenges in winter, only suitable for those with the required mountaineering skills and equipment.

    Hiking

‘The Grey One’ is regarded by mountain connoisseurs as amongst the finest on mainland Britain. It’s an opinion that’s hard to argue with. An 8km writhing mass of striated Torridonian Sandstone, the Liathach massif is home to two Munro summits, airy ridges, spectacular rock pinnacles, and some of the best scrambling in the UK.
